Election

Alastair is writing a series of posts about the theology of election (not the political sort!). He makes some very interesting points, and asks some pertinent questions. In particular, the articles on the relationship between election and sin, and about the sovereignty of God bear close attention. Although I’m not sure I’d follow quite the path he’s treading here, he certainly has some valid criticisms of the standard Calvinist and Arminian positions. Worth a read!

I read two of Alistairs posts. They were quite lengthy and well written. However, the Calvinism he attacks is not the historical Calvinism of Luther, Calvin, Spurgeon and Mohler. It is a caricature, so of course it is easy to undermine its alleged positions.

This has inspired me to write on the same subject. I’ll link to you and to Alistair, though the volume of his writing will prohibit me from directly adressing everything he says. I’ll instead use the positive argument method – “this is what the Reformed faith is”, not, “the Reformed faith isn’t that”.

Interestingly enough, one of Alistair’s commenters said the same thing. Unfortunately, he was not addressed.
