Memes

I was doing so well, avoiding all these memes washing around the blogosphere, and then I get hit by two of them! First, Sven hit me with the “one book” meme, then Dr Moose hit me with the “six weird things” meme. So, with no more ado, here are my answers to these two.

One book…

  1. One book that changed your life: Hmm. This is a hard one, because I don’t know that I can really blame any books for changing my life – it’s usually been people who’ve done that! If I had to pick one (and following Desert Island Discs rules, so I can’t pick the Bible), I suppose I’d pick The Screwtape Letters. It was (if memory serves) the first of C.S. Lewis’ explicltly Christian works that I read, so I guess it can be blamed for starting me thinking and reading about theology.
  2. One book you’ve read more than once: Ooh, so much choice! Out of hundreds of novels I’ve read and read, I don’t know how I could pick just one, so I’ll go for a piece of non-fiction. “The River Cottage Meat Book“:http://john.pettigrew.org.uk/blog/archive/2004/10/08/meat.
  3. One book you’d want on a desert island: A really good one about surviving on a desert island!
  4. A book that made you laugh:The Bodley Head“ by G.K. Chesterton – a collection of his essays and other journalism. The essay “On asparagus” is particularly fine :-)
  5. A book that made you cry: There’ve been a few, but I honestly can’t remember any specific ones, I’m afraid!
  6. A book I wish I’d written: 1001 reasons why reality TV is bad
  7. A book I wish had never been written: The Grapes of Wrath – the bane of my fifth year at school. Duuuuuuullll !
  8. A book I am currently reading: Nothing especially worthy – I just started Odds and Gods by Tom Holt.
  9. A book I’ve been meaning to read: No Rusty Swords by Dietrich Bonnhoeffer. Just not been in the mood for theology for a while…
  10. A book I wish had been written: How to discuss things courteously on the Internet, and why it’s important

Six weird things about me

  1. I’m anally retentive on a professional basis.
  2. I like to make sure light switches end up all pointing the same way.
  3. My middle toe on each foot is longer than any of the other toes.
  4. I have made my own black pudding.
  5. I prefer reading to partying.
  6. I have smoked marijuana but not tobacco.

Hmm. Who to tag?
Let’s try: Anne (obviously!), Ruth (of Willows), Heather (of Driftwood), Chris (of IWAI), Lee (if you’re out there!) and, oh yes, the two instigators of this whole thing can swap memes – Sven can tell us what’s weird about him (and, yes, Sven, that is how you spell it!) and Dr Moose can tell us about books.
