Blog interview

Kathryn has recently answered a blog interview, and I volunteered to take the next one. Now, she’s set me some questions, and here they are.

  1. Who is the person in your life who has most influenced you, and why?
  2. Tell us about one thing in the past week that has really made you smile.
  3. What one luxury would you take to your desert island?
  4. What makes you happy about your local church,( if anything)?
  5. You have a dream ticket to anywhere in the world…where do you choose to go?

And now, on to the answers.

  1. If there was one person I had to pin this dubious honour on, it’s probably my wife, Anne. Spending quite this much time with someone who doesn’t agree with everthing you say (and what a hell it would be if someone did so agree!) means that I’ve had to reassess many parts of my thinking. It was Anne who first got me voting Labour (although I’ve now dragged her off to the LibDems, at least temporarily!). It was Anne, in large part, who led me to start questioning evangelicalism and hence got me thinking seriously about God. It has been Anne who, through many things both small and great, has made my life what it now is.
  2. Adam has just turned three, and got a board game called “Tummy Ache” for his birthday. Last weekend, he was playing with his grandparents when his granny, getting into of the spirit of the thing, held her stomach and groaned, “Oh, my tummy is sore!” At which, Adam leant over the table and said with gravitas, “It’s OK Granny, it’s only a game!” :-)
  3. Assuming we’re playing by Desert Island Discs rules here (and so I can’t take my entire book collection), I’d guess my hammock (from the Mexican Hammock Company – Greenbelters will recognise them!). It’s just so comfortable, and I’d think that a comfy bed would make the island much more bearable!
  4. Not a whole lot at the moment, unfortunately. If I had to pick something, I’d go for feeling at home there – the combination of acceptance and familiarity in both community and liturgy (although, sadly, this is one of the aspects of the church that has suffered most in recent years). Being able to say Morning Prayer there most days is nice, too.
  5. New Zealand. It seems to be terribly trendy at the moment, but it is extremely beautiful. I’ve never been, but I do have family out there. There are some other interesting countries I’ve not visited, but I’ve been fortunate to visit a few already. New Zealand is a long way so I’d never be able actually to afford it, which makes it a good choice for my Dream Ticket :-) Actually, of course, I’d probably plump for a cottage in the Lake District or the Scottish Highlands. I’m not a great traveller, and prefer lazy holidays to frantic ones.

Now, the idea of this whole “blog interview” thing is that I then ask 5 questions each of five more people, who then answer them on their blogs or web pages (and so on and so forth). So, any volunteers?
